Our integrity line. We coach and give feedback. We do not supply answers about analyses you do not understand, we do not attend or take part in your defense, and we never write, finish or ghost-write chapters, proposals, reviews or results. Coaching does not replace your advisor or committee, and we cannot promise a pass, approval or a degree. Check your institution’s rules on outside help and disclose it if they require it. Read our academic integrity policy.
Why defenses feel harder than the writing
A defense asks you to explain, in real time, choices you made over months or years. Many students know their work well on paper but freeze when a committee member asks why they picked one method over another.
Formats vary widely. Some programs run a public presentation followed by a closed question session; others hold a single closed meeting. We do not assume yours, so your handbook and your advisor set the format and we work from them.
Preparation helps most when it is specific: rehearse the questions your design invites, tighten your explanation of what you found and why it matters, and practice speaking it aloud.
What does a dissertation coach do for a defense?
A dissertation coach at Help Me Bro plays the committee in a mock defense, asks hard questions about your own work and gives feedback on your answers, slides and delivery. You prepare the answers; the coach shows you where they are thin. Our broader research and dissertation coaching hub covers the other stages of a project.
How is a coach different from an editor or your advisor?
Your advisor and committee decide whether you pass, an editor refines the language of your documents, and a coach helps you prepare to explain your work. Help Me Bro offers coaching and editing, never the committee’s role.
| Role | Main job | Who decides |
|---|---|---|
| Advisor and committee | Guide you, prepare you and judge the defense | They decide the outcome |
| Help Me Bro coach | Run practice questions and give feedback on answers and slides | You decide what you say and how |
| Help Me Bro editor | Edit language and clarity in your slides and documents through comments | You accept or reject each suggestion |
Is defense coaching allowed?
Often yes, but rules differ by university, so check yours. Practicing with a coach is a common way to prepare, while having someone else answer for you or attend in your place is not acceptable. Some institutions ask you to disclose outside help; our editing disclosure statement guide explains how, and our academic integrity page sets out what we will and will not do.
How defense preparation works
Help Me Bro runs defense preparation in four phases. Each ends with something you can use and a point where you decide whether to continue.
- Scoping. We review your dissertation, your program’s defense format and your timeline. Deliverable at end of phase: a short written plan with the dates of your sessions. Approval gate: you approve the plan and scope before any session begins.
- Plain-language summary and slides. You write a short summary of your research in plain language and draft your slides; we give comments on structure, clarity and flow. Deliverable at end of phase: a commented copy of your summary and slides. Approval gate: you accept or reject each comment and revise them yourself.
- Question rehearsal. We ask the questions your design and findings invite, and you answer aloud. Deliverable at end of phase: your own list of likely questions with answers in your words. Approval gate: you confirm you can explain each answer unaided.
- Mock defense. We run a full practice session that follows your program’s format as closely as you describe it, then give feedback. Deliverable at end of phase: written feedback on your answers, pacing and slides. Approval gate: you decide whether you need another run before the real defense.
What a defense tests, and how we help
Every program words its expectations differently. This table shows how our coaching supports your own preparation on common themes.
| Requirement | Why it matters | How we help |
|---|---|---|
| A clear account of your research question and contribution | Committees start here | Ask you to explain it aloud and tell you where it loses us |
| Justification of your method | Method questions are common | Question your choices so you can defend them in your words |
| Understanding of your own results | You must interpret and defend your findings | Probe your explanations and point to gaps you should study |
| Honest discussion of limitations | Overclaiming draws challenge | Rehearse how to name limits calmly |
| Slides that support, not replace, your talk | Dense slides hide the argument | Give feedback on structure and clarity |
| Composure under questioning | Nerves can hide what you know | Run practice rounds so unexpected questions feel familiar |

Which stage are you at?
Defending a proposal
If you are preparing for a proposal defense, our proposal coaching covers the plan itself, and we can rehearse the questions your design invites.
Defending a final dissertation
Final defenses focus on what you found and why it matters. We rehearse questions about your results, limits and contribution, and you answer in your words.
Defending a master’s thesis or applied project
The same approach works, scaled to your format. Share your program’s rules, and we adapt the practice to them.
Engineering and medical or health-science work are outside our current scope, and we will say so honestly in a quote.
When we add one, it will show a student’s own slide with our comments beside it and the student’s own revision.

How do I prepare for my dissertation defense?
Start with your program’s defense format, then reread your dissertation and write a plain-language summary of your question, method, findings and contribution. Rehearse likely questions aloud and practice your slides. Help Me Bro runs a mock defense and gives feedback, but you prepare the answers and do the defending.
What is a mock defense?
A mock defense is a practice session in which someone plays the committee, asks questions about your work and gives feedback. At Help Me Bro we follow the format you describe as closely as we can. The questions come from your own design and findings, and you answer in your words.
What questions do committees commonly ask?
Common themes include why you chose your question and method, what your results mean, what the limits are and what your work contributes. Questions differ by committee and field, so we cannot predict yours. We rehearse the questions your own design invites, and you build the answers yourself.
What should my defense slides look like?
Slides should support your talk, not replace it: one idea per slide, short text and clear visuals. Your program or advisor may set rules, so follow those first. Help Me Bro gives feedback on structure and clarity in the slides you draft, and edits slide text through comments.
What do committees expect in a defense?
Expectations vary by program and committee. In general, they look for a clear account of your question and contribution, a defensible method and an honest view of limits. Your advisor and handbook are the right sources for your program. We coach you on explaining your own work and do not guess at your committee.
How long is a dissertation defense?
Length and format vary widely by university and program, so we do not state a typical time. Ask your advisor or graduate office, and plan your talk and practice to the format they give you. We build the mock defense around what you tell us about yours.
How do I handle nerves before my defense?
Preparation helps most. Practice answering questions aloud, run at least one full rehearsal and know your own work well enough to explain it simply. Help Me Bro’s mock defense is designed to make the real one feel familiar, but we cannot promise any outcome, and we are not a substitute for your advisor.
Can you answer my committee’s questions or attend my defense?
No. We never answer for you, supply answers about analyses you do not understand, or attend or take part in your defense. You must be able to explain and defend your own work.
